Relocation Depression is a Real Thing

Serious conversation here. Moving to Atlanta to a new home is demanding given the best conditions. You will be exiting your home--where you have made a life for yourself and your family members--and starting anew in a unfamiliar location. Sure, the move itself is exhilarating--an adrenaline rush which goes on for months during the time you find a new home, pack up the existing one, and get settled with your loved ones in their new routines. 
However as soon as the boxes are unpacked and you have figured out the most effective path to the dry cleaners, the new truth sets in--you are in a new location, and your pals and social life are back in your previous place--the area you at present think of as "home". And everything appears out of whack--there's a sense of being misplaced, and you're uncertain if it's an actual or psychological place, but it is simply wrong. It isn't home.

These kind of symptoms might be more than the post-move doldrums. It is possible that you may have something known as "relocation depression". Relocation depression is a real thing--the onset is after most of the hubbub of the move simmers down--and must be considered seriously and addressed in the event that you can't shake it by yourself.  

Indicators to Look out for

These are typically several of the symptoms to watch out for, the occurrence of several of these over a couple of week time indicates it is time to acquire some professional help. 

You Simply Can't Get Out of Bed 

When you do, you're lethargic and really do not have the vitality to get through the day. Insomnia is another sign of depression; you may be drained all the time, nevertheless you are unable to get to sleep. Or you are able to sleep--12 hours at a time and you are still drained. 

Lack of Interest in Anything 

In your past house or town, you had your schedule along with your stuff--work, pals, hobbies--that loaded your months. Currently, you have your job, however your buddies didn't come along with you and it's hard to be pumped up about your hobbies if, similar to a third-grader, you do not have anybody to play with. Grownups needs pals too, so do not feel bad or remorseful that you happen to be a tad lonely. 

In case you just cannot get enthusiastic about anything--pastimes, work, making new pals, interacting with family--likelihood is it's a symptom of depression. Together with the blahs comes being unable to focus--if something might get your attention, it would not last but a few minutes and you would zone out. 

Unwillingness to Leave the Home 

The new home is your refuge, and you just wouldn't like to get away from it. Let's be honest, you've got television shows for binging, and your social network to check. Social networking can be a double-edged sword as it enables you to stay up with buddies, however it can also facilitate and abet in your staying in rather than finding new friends.  

Tips on How to Combat Relocation Depression

There are some things you can do to remove the haze, so try these and see if you feel better. 

Get Some Exercise--Active people feel healthier, so get out and just stroll a couple of times each day. If you have a dog this is a built-in justification to get outside. Build on that outdoors time every day. 

Reduce or Do away with Alcohol--This is a depressant, therefore it is best to avoid it until you're feeling better. 

Talk with People--Take a class or join a newcomers group. Volunteer--extra hands and skills are always welcome. Just one or two new contacts will make a significant difference. 

Consider Something New--Go to galleries, cafes, theater, restaurants--explore your new town and get to know it. Being busy is much like exercise--it keeps the adrenaline moving along and you should have more energy. 

In case these solutions really don't help, find a professional. Relocation depression is no scam, and not dealt with, can get out of hand into something even more serious. You understand yourself better than anyone, and if things are not quite right, become aware of your body and mind. Moving to Atlanta is among life's most traumatic occurrences, but it does not have to be a cause for sadness or depression.
